In an astonishing show of bravery, as many as 2,0000 women and men flying Ukrainian flags staged a defiant protest against Putin’s forces in the central square of the southern city of Kherson.

One man managed to climb on top of a Russian armoured vehicle, from where he brandished his national flag as it sped through the crowds.

In other mobile phone recordings a woman, named as Valentina Maganova, is heard shouting above the sound of gunfire: “We’re not afraid. Repost this across the world. Please, support us. Kherson is Ukraine!”

Anton Gerashchenko, a Ukrainian government advisor and former MP, posted footage on Facebook showing hundreds of people assembling in the city centre on Saturday in defiance of Russian troops.
