Amid harsh winter weather in Afghanistan, an estimated 55 per cent of the nation’s 39 million people are facing extreme levels of hunger, according to the United Nations. The UN has launched its biggest-ever appeal, seeking more than US$5 billion to help the country described as being on the brink of a humanitarian crisis and economic collapse. The joint appeal seeks US$4.4 billion for the UN and its humanitarian partners to help 22 million people in Afghanistan, about half the country’s population. It calls for US$623 million for the 5.7 million Afghans who fled abroad to neighbouring Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) has started distributing “winterisation kits” to Afghan families living in camps for displaced people in the northwestern Herat province.
