Update on investigation into racism allegations in B.C. hospitals | LIVE
CA, 10 Jul 2020
Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond will provide an update on Thursday on the B.C. government's investigation into allegations that some emergency room workers have been playing a racist game, mainly targeting Indigenous patients.
Turpel-Lafond, who is B.C.'s former representative of children and youth, is leading the investigation into claims that ER staff at B.C. hospitals had placed bets on the blood alcohol level of primarily Indigenous patients prior to tests results being confirmed.
Métis Nation British Columbia Daniel Fontaine, who reported the practice to government officials, said in June that it highlights the urgent need to address systemic racism within B.C.'s health-care system.
It's unclear how many times the game has been played, where it has taken place or how long it has been going on.
