A special congressional committee launched to investigate the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol heard testimony on Tuesday from law enforcement officers who responded to the attack and were assaulted during the incident.

Capitol Police officers Harry Dunn and Aquilino Gonell and D.C. Metropolitan Police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges were among those testifying.

It was the first public hearing for the new committee and comes six months after supporters of former president Donald Trump stormed the building as lawmakers met to certify the election victory of now-President Joe Biden.

The hearing also comes amid a political battle between Democrats and Republicans after Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected two of the five members that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy named to sit on the panel, Jim Banks and Jim Jordan - who were vocal proponents of Trump's push of misinformation over the 2020 election results. It prompted him to withdraw all five appointments and continue to try and discredit the investigation.

Pelosi has named Republican lawmakers Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both critics of Trump's disinformation campaign, to the panel, though neither had received McCarthy's approval.
