US election battle intensifies after death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsburg

BBC, 20 Sep 2020
The election battle in America has intensified following the death of the Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was a champion of women's and minority rights, at the age of 87.

Donald Trump is insisting on his right to replace her, despite the Presidential election in November being less than two months away. He hopes to appoint a new conservative justice to the Supreme Court, which has immense power to shape US domestic policy.

However Mr Trump’s Democrat rival, Joe Biden, has said the nomination must wait until after the November poll, which he hopes will deliver him the presidency.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News reporting from North America editor Jon Sopel in Washington.
