The USS Connecticut, a Seawolf-class American submarine, collided with an underwater object in the South China Sea on October 2, 2021, while conducting routine operations. Officials say there were no life-threatening injuries and that the submarine was able to return to a US naval base in Guam under its own power. However, the vessel will undergo a full assessment after the front of the submarine sustained damage. The incident comes amid rising tensions in the region and following a new security pact reached by the US, UK and Australia in a bid seen as an attempt to counter China’s growing power in the area.
