Bars, party rooms, mahjong parlours and karaoke lounges in Hong Kong were allowed to reopen on April 29, 2021, after being closed for about five months. Under new rules, six types of entertainment venues can reopen if customers as well as staff have received at least one shot of a vaccine. The “vaccine bubble” was intended to boost the city’s flagging Covid-19 vaccination drive at the same time it helps prevent venues from going out of business. Social-distancing restrictions in restaurants were also being relaxed through a complicated new set of rules. Many restaurants chose not to join the multi-tiered system to avoid burdening staff and customers.
