Violent protests erupted in Barcelona on the evening of February 16, 2021, after Spanish police arrested rapper Pablo Hasel. Hasel was given a 9-month prison sentence in 2018 for glorifying terrorism and insulting the monarchy in his songs, but he had refused to surrender to police to serve his jail time. Hasel’s case has caused an uproar in Spain and has prompted the government to announce it will make free speech laws less restrictive.
