A volcano in the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma erupted on September 19, 2021, with columns of hot lava shooting hundreds of metres into the sky and rivers of molten rock slowly streaming down the mountainside. Lava flows entered the towns of El Paso and Los Llanos on Sunday, torching several homes and triggering the evacuation of as many as 10,000 residents from the surrounding area.
