Washington, D.C. protesters mark U.S. Independence Day with call to end anti-Black racism
CA, 05 Jul 2020
Protesters in the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C., marked the country's Independence Day on July 4 reciting the names of Breona Taylor and George Floyd, and demanding an end to anti-Black racism.
Floyd was a Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. in May. His death sparked a wave of global protests against racial injustice. Taylor was a 26-year-old Black emergency medical technician killed on March 13, after officers entered her apartment bearing a "no-knock" arrest warrant.
Saturday's protesters gathered in D.C.'s Lafayette Square, located near the White House.
Dozens of police on bicycles cleared an area where protesters had set up tents. They allowed protesters back in after the tents were moved away.
On July 3, U.S. President Donald Trump accused "angry mobs" of trying to erase history with efforts to remove or rethink monuments of U.S. historical figures, many of which are Confederate generals, and used a speech at Mount Rushmore to portray himself as a bulwark against left-wing extremism.
