WATCH: Amazon's Jeff Bezos delivers first congressional testimony as part of Judiciary tech probe
PBS, 30 Jul 2020
In his first ever testimony before Congress on Wednesday, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos characterized his company’s role in the U.S. as supporting small- and medium-sized businesses and creating thousands of jobs in various industries.
“Just like the world needs small companies, it also needs large ones,” Bezos said in a prepared statement published ahead of the July 29 hearing. “There are things small companies simply can’t do. I don’t care how good an entrepreneur you are, you’re not going to build an all-fiber Boeing 787 in your garage.”
The House Judiciary Committee is hearing testimony from Bezos, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Google’s Sundar Pichai and Apple’s Tim Cook as part of a yearlong investigation of Big Tech’s market dominance and treatment of competitors. The Judiciary panel has collected testimony from mid-level executives of the four firms, competitors and legal experts, but Wednesday’s hearing is the first time the four chief executives have testified jointly before Congress.
