WATCH: Attorney Caren Short says equal voting rights should be a ‘priority for every party’

PBS, 27 Aug 2020
Caren Short, a senior staff attorney with the Southern Poverty Law Center, expressed dismay that access to voting has become more politicized this election year, with Republicans claiming that Democrats are encouraging mail-in voting to boost their chances of winning, and Democrats accusing Republicans of taking actions to suppress the vote. “The reality is that ensuring safe, accessible, equal voting rights should be a priority for every party, every public servant in this country,” Short said. She added that while voter suppression laws have long affected Americans of color disproportionately, attacks on vote-by-mail will affect a wide range of Americans this cycle due to the large scope of impact of the pandemic. Short spoke with PBS NewsHour political reporter Daniel Bush ahead of the third night of the Republican National Convention.
