WATCH: Biden says America is ready to confront systemic racism
PBS, 21 Aug 2020
Joe Biden closed out his speech accepting the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination on Aug. 20 with a call to action for Americans to confront systemic racism. He called the violent 2017 protests in Charlottesville -- in which white supremacists and neo-Nazis clashed with peaceful demonstrators -- a “wake up call.” “My father told us that silence was complicit,” Biden said when explaining his decision to run for president. “And I could never remain silent or complicit.” Biden also spoke of visiting the daughter of George Floyd before her father, who was killed at the hands of Minnesota police, was laid to rest. He said that her words -- “my daddy changed the world” -- burrowed deep into his heart. "America's history tells us that it has been in our darkest moments that we've made our greatest progress," Biden said. “In this dark moment, I believe we are poised to make great progress again. That we can find the light once more."
