Albuquerque Police Department Detective Ryan Holets spoke on the second night of the Republican National Convention on Aug. 25, 2020 about the effect of drug use on the community he serves. He praised President Donald Trump for the action he has taken against drug and opioid use, including new federal funding and programs aimed at rural America. Holets pointed to the success of those programs in states where deaths related to opioids have dropped and a dramatic reduction in the prescription of opioid prescriptions. He also mentioned the country had seen its first drop in drug overdose deaths in 30 years; CDC data shows the new low was over the course of 20 years. The party planned a mix of virtual and in-person events in North Carolina and Washington, D.C., for its nominating convention after the coronavirus pandemic interrupted plans for a traditional nominating event.
