WATCH: Errin Haines on Trump’s return to a ‘racial playbook’ as strategy for reelection
PBS, 26 Aug 2020
Errin Haines, co-founder and editor at large for The 19th* News, said that she was not surprised to see President Donald Trump “return to a racial playbook as a strategy for reelection” in 2020. Haines noted that Trump began his campaign for president in 2015 by referring to some Mexican immigrants as “rapists,” and more recently his administration has pushed the idea that migrants traveling to the U.S. border in search of asylum pose a grave danger to America. “In 2020 we’re hearing him doubling down on a message of law and order amid this moment of national reckoning on race,” Haines said, adding that Trump has condemned peaceful protests against racial injustice and embraced Confederate statues that many have argued need to come down. Haines spoke with PBS NewsHour political reporter Daniel Bush on Aug. 25 ahead of the second night of the Republican National Convention.
