WATCH: Pew Research Director Mark Hugo Lopez on the challenges of turning out Latino voters
PBS, 26 Aug 2020
Mark Hugo Lopez, the director of global migration and demography research at Pew Research Center, said that there was likely to be a record turnout of Latinos in this year’s presidential election due to rapid population growth within the U.S. Hispanic community. He noted, however, that Latinos have often had lower voter turnout rates than Black and white Americans, and surveys conducted prior to the election indicated that the group was less engaged this cycle, as well. “If candidates engage Latinos, that could make a difference in getting out the Latino vote,” Lopez said. But with so many first-time voters -- many who are young and newly naturalized immigrants -- Lopez said it would be a challenge to motivate, register and encourage Latinos to vote. Lopez spoke with PBS NewsHour political reporter Daniel Bush on Aug. 25 ahead of the second night of the Republican National Convention.
