As Covid-19 infections in India continue rising rapidly, the capital New Delhi has imposed a weekend curfew to curb the further spread of the virus. Only essential activities, for food, groceries and medicine, are allowed as most other shops have been ordered to close. Driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant, the latest surge in infections brings the number of total confirmed cases in the country of 1.4 billion people to 35.53 million as of January 8, 2022, with over 91,000 new daily cases reported on January 8.
