White House responds to calls to pause Johnson & Johnson vaccine over blood clot reports

CA, 14 Apr 2021
White House Senior Coronavirus Coordinator Jeff Zients and director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci responded on Monday to a report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommending an immediate “pause” in the use of Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose COVID-19 vaccine.

Fauci says Americans who've recently received a Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine shouldn't be anxious about the "pause" in shots because of reports of blood clots.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called for the pause Tuesday to investigate six reports of potentially dangerous blood clots, among more than 6.8 million doses administered.

The agencies said in a joint statement Tuesday that the pause has been recommended “out of an abundance of caution.”

A timeframe for the pause is unclear, though the experts say it should be only a matter of days before a review and “aggressive outreach to clinicians” is completed.
