World Health Organization update on COVID-19, monkeypox | LIVE
CA, 12 Jul 2022
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and other officials are expected on Tuesday to provide an update on global COVID-19 cases, monkeypox, as well as other health concerns.
Last week, WHO announced that COVID-19 cases worldwide have seen a 30 per cent increase in the last two weeks and that more 6,000 cases of monkeypox have now been reported across 58 countries in the current outbreak.
The increase in COVID-19 cases is driven by the new coronavirus subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 in Europe and the U.S., as well as subvariant BA.2.75 being detected in India.
COVID-19 testing has decreased dramatically in many countries, which obscures the full picture of virus spread, Tedros said.
