Kaavan, the only Asian elephant in Pakistan, is about to leave the country that has been his home for more than three decades, and eight years since he lost his mate. Images of Kaavan chained up in Marghazar Zoo in the capital Islamabad several years ago sparked angry responses from around the world. An online petition even caught the attention of American pop icon Cher. In May 2020, a court ruled that the elephant should be relocated to Cambodia. When the 35-year-old bull elephant recently got his first medical check in four years, veterinary surgeons said that while Kaavan seems extremely bored, he is fit for travel.
