The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted on December 20, 2020. Residents were asked to stay indoors as steam clouded the sky and ash fell. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory recorded an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 located beneath the volcano about an hour after the volcano erupted. Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes and has been erupting regularly since the 1950s.
